The topspin can be a great tool to deceive the opponent and end a rally when the opponent is close to the base line. By taking the pace off the ball, you can also make your opponent put more power into the ball which can work over a long rally in tiring them. However the biggest problem with playing the topspin is the mastery of it. While using it perfectly is a great weapon to win points, an inadequate practice of the same can backfire and get you to lose more points than you can win.
One important factor in playing the forehand topspin tennis shot is the grip of the racquet. To play the forehand topspin shot perfectly, go for the western grip. This forces you to play the topspin with an upwardly shot that helps push the ball above the net. What is the use in playing a topspin shot if the ball were to land in your own court! If you want to play a flatter shot, go for the semi-western grip. However, avoid the eastern grip since it needs you to whip the shot upward which is pretty difficult.
So how do you actually play the shot? To play the shot, keep the racquet head low and closed. As you reach the ball, pull the butt of the racquet towards the ball from the bottom. At the point of reaching the ball, open the racquet face at such an angle that the length of the racquet is exactly parallel to the ground. Complete the shot at contact.
