For the past 20 plus years tennis, has been about the enjoyment of playing, the personal gratification of being acknowledged as a decent player and being asked for advice (which is how I got into coaching and mentoring). Now, I am seeing it from the perspective of strangers. When I say strangers I don’t just mean people I’ve never met, but also strangers to the game. It is opening my eyes to thinking about how others view tennis. I have realized that tennis is the perfect sport for fun and exercise. The welcome mat is always there for one and all to come. From the devout players (like me); players who see it as another form of exercise in their cross training regime, those who would like to learn the game or, have swung a racquet but have not become hooked; No matter how you personally view tennis, everyone likes a tennis party and an excuse to get together.
Even the devout players enjoy a tennis party get together after the serious side of tennis and enjoy talking ‘tennis’. In this age of everything being computer driven, when we are shopping online, dating online, communicating online, playing games online, being offline outdoors is a good thing. I believe that our lives are enhanced by those activities that draw us to the outdoors. Enjoying activities outdoors with friends, family and new acquaintances can be a lot of fun. One of the churches in my subdivision recently formed a social tennis league and the Friday night mixers tend to draw couples and singles alike.
There are so many tennis courts in your area (just Google public tennis courts) and there are probably a number of people you know who have access to private tennis courts in their own subdivision, condo or apt complex. It’s as easy as saying, ‘Tennis anyone?’ and you will be surprised at the number of people who will have some knowledge of the game or a venue to which they have access.
Tennis equipment is only as expensive as you want it to be. You don’t start outlaying the serious dollars unless you are serious about the game. Tennis parties are a great place to find out what everyone else is trying. So while you may not have a tennis racquet, it’s easy to borrow one or use a demo for a social event. That way you can get a feel for a racquet or two, before you actually buy one. If you don’t have real tennis shoes, any athletic shoes with good stability will do for the occasional game of tennis. But, if you decide to play more often, you need to invest in a good pair of real tennis shoes. Tennis is an activity where you will never hear the phrase ‘I don’t have anything to wear’ and it doesn’t break the bank to play.
Hits and giggles are what it’s all about when you plan a tennis party in the evening. If you accidentally get some exercise in the process consider it a bonus. If you are racking your brain for some ideas I’d like to make a few suggestions for you to consider.
