The high velocity of the small green tennis ball as it sails back and forth across the court during a match can make it hard to see and it can quickly become a dangerous weapon of stealth, unless it is made more visible against a darker blue, black, green or red tennis backdrop curtain.
Why are tennis backdrops necessary?
Vinyl backdrop curtains serve three main purposes for indoor facilities: They look nice, they help deaden the ball and the help players see the ball. They take the place of wind screens in outdoor courts, which often double as a visibility aid. They also can transform the interior of even the drabbest off-white, colored walls to a place of streamline competition and stunning victories. Most importantly, tennis backdrop curtains reduce the amount of distractions from other players, coaches, fans, reporters and photographers moving between courts during a match.
Measuring your court
Hallways can be created between and around courts during high traffic tournaments with the use of tennis backdrop curtains. When fitting a facility for backdrops start with a scaled diagram. Entryways are vitally important and doorways, viewing windows and ventilation should be calculated into the dimensions of the court and locations should be specifically indicated on the final order. Tennis backdrop curtain sets can be ordered with standard square corners or angled California corners for an added touch of sophistication. Companies can and will often customize backdrop curtains to facility dimensions, adding final touches, such as team logos or brand sponsors, just be sure to ask about pricing.
The hardware
Tennis backdrop curtains should raise a minimum of 10 feet from the court floor, but can be as tall as the ceiling. Backdrops should hang from high tension wires, cable and turnbuckle or track systems the same as tennis court divider nets. Cable kits are sold separately for facilities that have no existing track or cable systems. Snap hooks are sold for easy curtain connection to existing cables.
A few important things to know
The bottom of a backdrop curtain should never be fastened to the floor. This allows for two things: it creates a flexible surface from which to deaden the rebound of tennis balls that are sent flying in that direction and draping the bottom of the backdrop on the floor allows it to be pushed out of the way when cleaning crews come in later. Heavy machinery can abrade and snag expensive curtains in one pass. Protecting an investment such as this should be top priority.
All tennis backdrop curtains should meet Federal and local fire and safety codes, check with the manufacturer to make sure their materials meet those standards before ordering.
Tennis courts at the lush tropical resorts of the Caribbean, where the trees are as vibrant and green as the tennis ball, are not the only place that players may have a problem with ball visibility. Indoor courts with lighting issues or lifeless colored walls can make their facilities more hospitable and invigorating by covering the walls with tennis backdrop curtains.
